"Come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation!" Psalm 95:1

I have been singing and playing guitar for over 45 years. Whether it was singing on a California beach, on the streets of Westwood or leading worship songs in church, I noticed early on the universal and emotional connection of music God created in us all. It can bring tears to their eyes, unspeakable joy to their heart or just a smile to their face. Music is moving and powerful!
Dementia is a chronic, incurable brain disease that causes memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. Though there is no cure for dementia at this time, research suggests (and I have seen firsthand) that music can help soothe, comfort, relieve anxiety and agitation and bring joy to those living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Doctors can't explain it, but the key areas of the brain that are linked to musical memories are relatively undamaged by this disease! That's where the beauty of music comes in! I sing to those living with this devastating disease the songs they request. If they are unable to communicate, I get recommendations from their family and friends about the songs they have enjoyed in their past. I am so blessed to see their countenance light up when they hear a song they love. You haven't lived until you've seen a 90-year old get up on her walker and dance to Elvis' Jailhouse Rock!
When you think of a missionary, you may think of someone who has a strong calling and passion to share the good news of salvation thru Jesus Christ to the remote parts of the world (Matthew 28:18-20). Well, I have that same calling and passion, except my mission fields are assisted living communities, nursing homes, hospitals and hospice. My prayer is to bring the love, comfort, joy and peace of Jesus Christ, thru song and human interaction, to those living with Alzheimer's disease/dementia.
