"Come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation!"

I have enjoyed singing and playing music for over 45 years. Whether I sang on a California beach, on the streets of Westwood or leading worship songs in church, I noticed early on the emotional impact music has on people. It can bring healing tears to their eyes, great joy to their heart or just a smile to their face. Music is moving and powerful!
Dementia is a chronic, incurable brain disease that causes memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. Though there is no cure for Dementia at this time, research suggests (and I have 1st hand experience) that music has been known to help soothe, comfort, bring joy, relieve anxiety and agitation to those living with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. Doctor's can't explain it, but the key areas of the brain that are linked to musical memories are relatively undamaged by this disease! That's where the beauty of music comes in. I sing to those living with this devastating disease the songs they request. If they can't communicate, I get recommendations from family and friends about the songs they have enjoyed in their past. I am so blessed to see their countenance "light up" when they hear a song that connects with them. You haven't lived until you've seen a 90 year old get up and dance to Jailhouse Rock by Elvis!
When you think of a missionary, you may think of someone who has a strong calling and passion to share the good news of salvation thru Jesus Christ to the remote parts of the world (Matthew 28:18-20). Well, I have that same calling and passion, except my mission fields are assisted living communities, nursing homes, hospitals and hospice. My prayer is to bring the love, comfort, joy and peace of Jesus Christ, thru song and human interaction, to those living with Dementia/ Alzheimer's disease.
